Dr. Furman received his M.D. degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1978 and completed a three year residency in family medicine at North Carolina Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill. After four years as a Family Physician in the U.S. Navy (including one year as Director of Residency Training), he returned to Chapel Hill to join Dr. Guiteras in private practice.
Dr. Furman has special interests in sports medicine, cardiac preventive health, and stress management.
He also enjoys golf and playing clawhammer banjo and mountain dulcimer. He has recorded several CD’s of traditional American and Celtic music. He is married to Janet Hastings Furman and they have one daughter, Eva, and one son, Jory (who lives in their hearts).
In May of 2008 Dr. Furman converted his practice back to a more traditional approach to patient care. This was done so Dr. Furman can continue to provide the warm, caring, insightful, and high-quality care upon which he built his reputation in Chapel Hill over the past 24 years. An emphasis on wellness and prevention (instead of just “reactive” medicine), spending more time with fewer patients, being more available to patients (through office visits, telephone contact, and a secure email portal), and having more time to communicate with specialists and hospitals to better coordinate patient care when needed are all features of this practice model.
